Compressible, Resilient Sealing Material
Cork provides a useful combination of compressibility, flexibility and recovery, allowing it to conform to slight irregularities between mating surfaces. This can help create an effective seal where rigid materials would be less able to accommodate variations in surface finish or alignment.
The cellular structure of cork also provides good vibration and sound-damping characteristics, making it useful where sealing needs to be combined with cushioning or isolation. Its relatively low density additionally makes cork a lightweight option for a variety of industrial and technical applications.
Suitability for liquids, chemicals and elevated temperatures depends upon the particular cork grade and any binder used within the material. Operating conditions should therefore be considered when specifying cork for demanding sealing applications.
