Polyester Gaskets and Seals

Polyester is a family of polymer materials. In engineering gasket applications, polyester commonly refers to PET or PETP, a strong and dimensionally stable thermoplastic with low moisture absorption and useful electrical insulating properties.

These characteristics make polyester suitable for a wide variety of accurately cut non-metallic components.

Polyester is relatively firm compared with elastomeric materials such as EPDM, nitrile or silicone rubber and is therefore not generally selected where substantial compression is required to form a pressure-tight seal.

It is better suited to precision gaskets, insulating components and light-duty sealing applications where dimensional accuracy and separation are important.

Polyester generally absorbs less moisture than nylon and therefore offers better dimensional stability in damp or humid environments.

Nylon can provide greater toughness and flexibility in some applications, while polyester is often preferred where shape retention, electrical insulation and low moisture absorption are more important.

Both polyester and acetal offer good dimensional stability and low moisture absorption compared with many other engineering plastics.
